Reflection 8

I felt particularly interested in the GSTE and the SUTE. Our school is currently looking at a systemic change. Our community is going to be growing in the next five years due to a corporation bringing 5000 jobs to the area. This news is forcing the school district to look at what changes need to be made to accomadate this growth. We have hired a facilitator and are going through the steps that were outlined in the Table 21.2. The district has involved the same "stakeholder" mentioned in the chapter to take part. They have developed the Starter Team. We are in the very beginning phase. My understanding is that the first meeting broke off into small groups to write down the things that they felt our district did right. They then came together to share and reflect on what each group found. This help to establish that everyone was "on the same page". I am interested in this process and have now become more invested in going to the meetings as I have begun to read how this process can look.

Wow I can't imagine my school district suddenly getting that many more jobs. Thats great news! I am sure it has to be hard for a school system though. Someone once told me you could only build a school so much larger than the existing district. I wonder if that is true?

That is pretty exciting for your distict. Given the economy today, and most schools wondering how they can maintain what they have, you can look to how you can grow and improve...it is good to see that they are taking the right approach, and it helps when teachers are a part of it instead of only administrators and active parents.

--Laura,
Wow! How cool to have an on-going example of what were learning. It is nice to hear that your district is concerned with a team effort and whether or not they are on the same page. I attended a few meetings when our home district was going through growing pains. They listened to parental concerns, but didn’t do more than address them at that particular moment. I was quite disappointed to be given the brush-off.

That is good news but obviously going to be a challenge as the school grows. I was surprised at how indepth the process is. I think sometimes as teachers we just get to hear about the later stages. Its great that they have you involved now and are seeking your opinions.

That is amazing! Times must be very exciting for you! I must ask, what corporation is come to your area? Thats really cool that your school is actually doing what we are learning about. I hope this systemic process is the right one and hope everything works out!
