Open Source Applications

I looked at three different open source applications. I explored Zoho, Picnik, GIMP and Phixr. I am also familiar with Picasa and Open Office. The school I work at only uses Open Office. We no longer have access to Microsoft programs, althought we do have Adobe Photoshop. We also use Picasa to organize and print the photos we have taken throughout the year. Here are my thoughts:

Zoho: This application seemed to be pretty comprehensive. I played around with it some. It seemed to offer many user friendly applications in one area. I am wondering if a school could operate on this system as we are operating on Open Office. It has definitely saaaaved the district money. It is interesting to think that you can share documents instead of emailing them. I also found that you coudl work collabratively on a document.

Picnik: I really like this application. It was pretty straight forward and very similiar to Picasa. It seemed to have all the editing tools that I needed and was easy to download and get started. As with other applications, I could send it the edited photo to my flickr account.

Phixr: This is another photo editing application and is the least favorite of the one's I sampled. It didn't seem to have the tools I was familiar with although I could send it to my flicker account as I could in Picnik. It was fairly simple to download my picture and was just as fast as other editing programs I have used.

Open Office: As I said before, our district no longer uses Microsoft Word, but only uses Open Office for our word processing needs. It did take some getting used to, but most of the applications are similiar to Microsoft. It doesn't really offer a user friendly way to make a calendar or produce labels, but it can be done. I do all my lessons and newsletter in this program and it works fine. It has saved our district some money. It will convert other programs to Open Office as well. It has worked out well and I use it at home also.

Picasa: I do love this photo editing program. It is user friendly and has all the tools I need. It has some other features that I didn't notice in the other programs. I made a collage of my students to put on my web page and it allows me to do quick slideshow. This is great! My students love it when we come back from an event and I can show them the pictures right away. The slide show does not allow me to play music with the pictures, but it allows the students to see the pictures quickly.

What was your favorite activity of the semester and why?

It is hard to choose just one activity! I enjoyed creating the blog and the web page! I also enjoyed learning about a variety of programs! As a representative of the District Technology Group and am constantly wondering what type of programs are available and how these programs could help us with educating our students and preparing them for the job market. I realize that I teach first grade, but you would be amazed at what they can accomplish! I really enjoyed being exposed to new programs, especially those of the Open Source nature. My district is all for using technology, but it is even better if it won't cost them any money! Thanks for a great experience!

Reflection 13

What most made you say (or think) "that's so neat!" Why?

I was mostly connected to The Application of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Performance Tracking. The Application of Artificial Intelligence was the I-PUSH and I-PULL. It is exciting to think of a technology that can "actively guide learners toward achieving expertise within a given content area". The idea that it could diagnose the learners errors is GREAT because then the instruction can be designed to meet the individual needs of the students!

The Advanced Performance Tracking is almost more than I can comprehend. It is amazing to think that one can improve a task by the diagnoses of a computer. This seems to be most relevant for those who desire to improve their performance in a sport. I am interested to know how this would benefit the world of education.Any ideas?

Reflection 12

Describe two tangible take-aways that you think you could apply in your work, In other words, what are two ways you believe you can apply ideas in this chapter to improve your teaching/instructional design work?

This chapter was so interesting to me. I really connected with their explanation of how the brain works in the section, "How Humans Learn The Cognitive Components of Learning". Since having some training in the Garner's Multiple Intellingences, I have always been quite curious as to how the brain works. This was a fairly simplistic outline of how the brain learns. This information is imparative, if we are to teach children effectively! As I was reading about the visual media, I kept thinking about the way I use technology and if there are other ways I could use it to help studens reach their potential. I found the section that talked about the students prior knowledge as an important one. This is something I will keep in mind as I work with my first grade students and my colleagues. I have been working this summer to help integrate the use of technology into our curriculum and have been using some of the concepts in the book to help me design lessons. Teachers can only use technology in which they have been exposed to and had experience with! As I right the lessons, I have to keep my audience in mind, making sure they are working within their comfort zone and at the same time stretching them a bit. I am also excited to share the information that stated taht the Rich Media benefits the low-knowledge learner. In the past, I have worked with kids who struggle in writing. I am going to be looking for a program (tutorial?) that show/teaches kids how to hold their pencil, what their posture should look like and how to form the letters. I am wondering if with the right media instruction if these kids will be able to make the connection they are lacking. This will be an interesting experiment because the act of writing is also a very developmental activity. A student needs to have the ability to grasp the pencil correctly before any of the other things can take place. I loved this chapter! I am excited to see where media will take my students (first grade and colleagues)next year!

Screencasting

Well, I am quite excited about screencasting. I downloaded Camtasia and watched the tutorial at the beginning of the download. Unfortunately, I did not make the actual tutorial. The program I needed to download the images were at my school. I actually thought of two applications where this program would come in handy. One is to make a tutorial for my first grades that taught them how to do our Acclerated Reader program. This is a program were children read a book at their level and then take a comprehension test on the computer. Many schools use this program. At the first grade level is where many students are introduced to the program. The tutorial would take them through the steps of how to get logged on. This may not seem to difficult at first glance, but we are a big school and there are lots of steps involved.

The benefit of having this tutorial is that each student could view it when they are ready. First graders vary in their abilities. Some are ready the first day of school, some in January and some in April. The tutorial would allow the student to view it when they are ready or for review.

The second idea was to make a tutorial for our staff members as they learn how to add pages to their Schoolwires account. Schoolwires does provide some tutorials for the basic stuff, but it would be nice to add some that would include some of the more fun and creative stuff.

Google Webpage Design

I have to admit, I was feeling nervous about creating this webpage. I have created a page for my school but was feeling overwhelmed at the thought of doing it without any support from my colleagues at school. As I begun the process, I found that after I got signed in the process was very similiar to the design my school chose. I think I have mentioned it before, but we are using Schoolwires as our webpage design. It should be active in July. For this assignment, I added a direct link to my page and then another link that takes you to our school website as it looks now.

http://llballard23.googlepages.com/ballardboulevard

I would not use this with students because it would be too difficult for my first graders. At first, I thought it was easy to use, but then I got into a problem were I was finished with my design and it would not let me save. I went to google help and apparently it has happened several other people. The computer thinks that your are disconnected from the internet, but you really aren't. As I searched, no one had seemed to solve the problem yet. I had to start over

Reflection 11

Reflect on what you perceive to be your own areas of strength and what competencies you feel you need to work hardest to develop given your professional goals.State and describe at least three compentencies you'd like to develop and why.

Strengths:

I think my strengths lie in the fact that I am not afraid to try things I am not familiar with. I know enough to figure out most applications if I am given enough time to do them. This comes in handy in the public education field because training doesn't always happen. My school has implemented several programs such as photo story, open office, novell:groupwise, Infinite Campus, picasa, Schoolwires and several others. One of my other strengths is that I enjoy helping my colleagues with learning how to use and implement them into their curriculum. They seem comfortable to ask me for help and if I don't know how to do something, I will try to figure it out. I guess I could categorize this as staff development.

Weakness:

My weaknesses lie in the fact that I have been exposed to so little! This class has forced me to explore new programs and think about curriculum development in a new way. There is so much for me to learn. The hard part, but yet exciting, is that I will never know everything in the field because of the way it constantly changes.

Competencies:

Training Manager
I would love to develop my competencies as a training manager as helping my colleagues is one of my passions. I desire to help them be excited about the technology that is available to them to enhance their communication and their teaching. I am currently on the TAG (Technology Advisory Group)team and am developing curriculum for first grade. The development of the curriculum is challenging, but what I really enjoy is sharing it with the staff.

Instructional Designer
Out of necessity, I would like to develop the skills needed to better design. As a teacher in the public sector, we often design our own lessons and put together a curriculum that has been mandated. This isn't my passion because organization and making sure every aspect is considered is difficult for me. I often can see the end goal, but have trouble figuring out how I will get people there.

Evaluate the Design
As a classroom teacher, I always find myself questioning why we do thing the way we do. Is it best for kids? Does it make sense for the teacher? Are students learning the key concepts? Are the key concepts clearly defined? My experience with this is only in the education sector. I have served on several committees that try to redesign the way things are working. It seems like we are constantly doing things in a trial and error basis. I would like to work on how to do this with the methods introduced in the chapters we have read and become a leader in this area.

Reflection 10

For you reading reflection, since you have now read for the past few weeks about instructional design/technology in three different context (business, P-12 and higher education),identify 2 or 3 significant themes or differences you have noticed across these contests and describe the. Is there a particular area or way that you believe your current professional working environment would learn from the other contests described in these chapters?

A common theme found in every context was the awareness that change was going to happen and that each time change needed to occur there needed to be a process adopted to ensure the change was successful. It seemed that analyzing, develop and evaluate was a common theme. the differences where in the reason as to why these changes were going to take place. In the business world, change occurs because one needs to increase productivity. In the P-12 and higher education change at different levels but mostly because the state changes the curriculum requirements both the content of what is taught and what is to me mastered. This causes change to occur at different levels as well. Change in the way we teach and the way the students learn.

Another theme is the need to analyze, develop and evaluate each design. In the P-12/higher education world this happens each year as the state standards and curriculum requirements change. It is necessary to analyze to see if the lesson meets the requirement. It is necessary to develop or "tweek" the curriculum to make sure it is meeting the standars. It is necessary evaluate to see if students are learning the curriculum. The business sector analyzes there product or ability to make it and then develops it or designs it to increase productivity. Each step is necessary to make the necessary change.

The third commonality is the need for all this to happen in an organized way. Each area needs to have plan to follow. The chapters introduced the different ways in which busniess and education go about making the change. I am under the impression that a business can make a change quicker than the education system is able to make a change. The business sector is able to implement each stage at a faster pace than the education system. In education, by the time a recommended change is actually implemented, it is time for a new change.

Create a Map

I created a lesson for my first grade classroom that addresses several areas of our curriculum. The first grade curriculum requires students to compose a nonfiction report. We do this through our science unit where kids student vertebrates. At the end of our lesson the children choose on vertebrate (bird, fish, mammal) to research. They write a short report and create a diorama. Each child presents their information in front of the class. Creating the map also allows me to teach the concept of continent, state, county, and city. My thinking is that we could use the Smartboard to create a class vertebrate map where we would mark the location of each students animal. The landmark allows you to click on it. From this point we would have a couple of options. When you click on it,the student could add a picture and one fact. Another thought I had was to create a podcast and embed it to the mark and have the student read their report so when you click on a landmark you could here their report online. Would this work? I am going to try it this summer to see how it goes. :) I hope my map makes sense!

Reflection 9

Summative Reflection on course.

I am going to start with the latter part of the question that was directed to students that were new to this masters program. I biggest frustration was just becoming acclimated with the Blackboard itself. This is the first online course I have taken and there were many things I didn't know about. I wish I would have known earlier about the session I could have gone to to familiarize myself with the Blackboard and my WMU account. I didn't even realize I had an email address with the school until the wiki assignment. I couldn't figure out why I could make changes until I was chatting online with someone. I went to school the next day to ask my TI instructor at school. She thought that the blackboard mailing system was my email. When I went back to my account later, I saw the WMU mail and clicked on it to see what would happen and then saw the invite email. Now that I have figured out the Blackboard system, the course is going much smoother.

Blog:

I have really enjoyed the using the blog. My husband has had one at blog spot and I have watched him develop his, but really haven't had the time to create my own. The blog we are using for the class is similar to one that we use for my school. My web page is: Ballard Boulevard

I have found it a great way to share information with parents. It has also allowed relatives from out of state to be a part of their grandchild, niece/nephew school experience. The photo gallery has been very popular!

Photo Sharing:

I found this lesson to be exciting and frustrating at the same time. I did not like the Flickr program that I used, but enjoyed reading every one's ideas on how one could use this. I am thinking about using a photo sharing site next year with my parents. I am going to talk with my principal first to see if there are reasons he might not want this. The idea of photos being online may make some uncomfortable, but I am sharing them now on the web page. The difference would be two fold. The way I am sharing them now is for viewing only. Parents do not have the ability to download the image. The other difference is parents cannot share photos with me or with each other. I would like to think more about this idea because I think parents and students might enjoy a way to share photos with one another. We will see what happens.

RSS Feed:

We have this capability and use it in our Schoolwires account. I would like to hold a parent meeting at the beginning of the year and allow people to set up the account to my web page. This would allow me to make changes and they would be notified automatically. Currently, I am emailing everyone when I make a change. This is working, but makes more work for me.

Wiki:

I found this to be the most frustrating! I think it was mostly because of the email invite. As a first grade teacher, I didn't really find it all that useful. I suppose that in classrooms where kids are older it may be useful for group projects. Obviously, it helped us create a group project without physically being together. My learning style however, craves the human element! :)

Google Map/Inserting an Image:

I love this website! I have used in my classroom for a variety of things! Inserting the map and an image was not difficult. As I said before, it is very similar to what I do in Schoolwires. I haven't yet created a map, but am anxious to explore this lesson. Part of our first grade curriculum involves map reading and making. I am curious to see if it will meet the needs of first graders or if it will be too difficult. I will let you know.

Podcast:

I am very interested in creating my own podcast. Unfortunately, I did not have time to do this for this assignment. I have not spent much time researching podcast that I am interested because of the lack of time I have right now. I hope to investigate this further this summer. I hope to learn how to create a podcast so I can incorporate it in my classroom next year. I was thinking about having kids read their animal reports on a podcast and doing book recommendations also. I will have to do this toward the end of the year when they have grown some! I found this lesson easy and useful!

Reflection 8

I felt particularly interested in the GSTE and the SUTE. Our school is currently looking at a systemic change. Our community is going to be growing in the next five years due to a corporation bringing 5000 jobs to the area. This news is forcing the school district to look at what changes need to be made to accomadate this growth. We have hired a facilitator and are going through the steps that were outlined in the Table 21.2. The district has involved the same "stakeholder" mentioned in the chapter to take part. They have developed the Starter Team. We are in the very beginning phase. My understanding is that the first meeting broke off into small groups to write down the things that they felt our district did right. They then came together to share and reflect on what each group found. This help to establish that everyone was "on the same page". I am interested in this process and have now become more invested in going to the meetings as I have begun to read how this process can look.

Reflection 7

What are, in your mind, two unique or interesting or different or noteworthy ways Instuctional Design/Technonlogy has been used in business and industry that you believe could be usefully applied to your own professional work? Explain.

I found this chapter to hit close to home. I will comment on the Roles of Instructional Designer and the Technonlogy-based training delivery.

I was surprised at my reflection on how little my school used technology to train the employee. We still seem to rely heavily on the "human relationship" piece of training. Within the education profession, there is a lot of discussion, analysis and reflection that has to take place. This is difficult to do on a computer. Educators at the K-12 level are working with people, not products. It seems that technology based training would work better in an enivronment where a product was being sold or information about a process/procdure, or machine needed to be learned.
The education system can use technology to teach policies and procedures, but will have difficulty when the lesson is about teaching itself. I have been trying to think about ways education could use technology-based training. Our district is looking into providing online classes to earn CEU's through KDS or the Michigan Learn Port.
This is a great idea! It is something we all have to do and online is a great solution. Our tech department has also provided tutorials to Schoolwires,Openoffice and Infinite Campus. I found myself identifying with the process of the Instructional Designer. Our building works together in committees and usually we have one person on the committee that acts as the "designer" or "leader". The difference is that this "leader" is not vocally identified, but there is clearly a "leader". We all have the same goal, which is to deliver curriculum that allows children to learn and to efficiently use the resources we have available to deliver the curriculum. I also found it interesting that "Trainers rated implementation support as relatively important, while instructional designers rated it as least important". In the school environment, I feel like the administrators are playing the role of the "instructional designer" because they need change to happen fast and at little or no cost! I see the "leaders" as the trainers. They realize that in order for a training project to be successful it will take time and money!

Reflection 6

What are some ways the ideas/concepts/principles discussed in this chapter could be applied in your professional work? Do you see opportunities where these ideas could help you or your students?

Well, I must confess, I found this chapter a little difficult to follow (I always have trouble when readings use acronyms). I don't know if it is the time of year for me or what. I have felt extremely tired this week, but here are my thoughts.
The part that made the most sense to me is the relationship between HPI and HPT. It stated that "human performance improvement" is what we wish to achieve and human performance technology is the means we use to achieve it." (Reisner,
p137). I felt like the chapter focused mostly on business situations, but realize that schools are much like a business if you look at each student. We want the each student to achieve there maximum potential and we as educators have to figure out the means to help them achieve. This is no easy task! It think that what schools discover that inorder for them them to perform at their maximum potential, the same incentives to do well have to be in place for staff members. My thinking is this, until administrators realize that teachers need to see how technology benefits students and and how it impact their teaching. That teacher training is the "organizational investment" and not a cost.

Reflection 5

Will the Internet and Web have a major impact on educational programs at grades
K-12, and/or higher education and adult education?

It was interesting to read the history of the previous techonolgy advances. I keep asking myself why the radio, television and instructional films didn't impact education more. My only thought is that these sorts of technological advances only allowed the "student" to listen and watch. As we think about same question only applying to the use of computers in education, my response is that it does allow the "student" to interact at some level. In fact, it gives the "student" choices. The question is at what level of education will the impact be the greatest. My experience tells me that in the K-12 setting, and any setting for that matter, the use of computers and "technology" will only go as far as the budget allows. This not only includes the equipement that is needed but also the training. I don't feel that the K-12 educational system will be largely impacted until teachers have the knowledge to use it. This knowledge will need to start in our college education courses teaching the future education professions how to use techonolgy within their specialty. Technology can't be seen as a class that you take, but as a way to learn with all curricular areas. This mindset will take time to accomplish. I believe that with the use of the Web, the knowledge could be attained at a quicker pace, but it will still take time.

Reflection 4

3) How might you incorporate photo sharing into a educational activity or unit? What might be some concerns you would have about allowing students play with these services? What might be a great benefit of such services?

Photo sharing could be used in much the same way as social bookmarking with same risk. Students could access photos that pertain to a certain topic and post them. The risk of this is the possibilty of students finding and sharing photos that are inappropriate. I think that with the current blockers that school systems have that this issue could be somewhat controlled. The biggest risk would be for high schools. Many high school students can figure out how to beat the system ( if you know what I mean!)

4) In reading Chapter 2, what similarities and what differences did you identify between the process the authors describe and the processes you have used to develop educational lesson plans? If you have not developed educational lesson plans, were there aspects of the process described in this chapter that you found particularly surprising, useful or unnecessary?

I first want to share that I had never thought of the term instructional design until this book. The word that has been used is curriculum design. Teachers are constantly being asked to revamp curriculum to fit the needs of the GLCE's or to fit the state standards. The curriculum changes so often that the ADDIE approach looks good on paper, but is sometimes difficult to achieve. This five step process can be extremely time consuming in a classroom of young children where they are not yet independent learners. One has to think about how to collect the data in a way that is developmentally appropriate and time effective. Many times we have so much to teach, that we skip some of the steps to fit everything in.

It is my hope that the use of technolgy can help us achieve these steps more efficiently! I would like for the mindset of educators to be that when they hear the word Instructional Design, that the use of technology is a given, not an extension of the title.

Reflection 3

1) What value (if any) do you think social bookmarking might hold for teachers and/or students? You may think about students sharing with each other, teachers sharing with their students, teachers sharing with other teachers, administrators sharing with teachers, sharing with parents, or any other scenario(s) you can imagine.

I think that social bookmarking could help students share information when gathering it for a research project. This would allow them to research different parts of the project and then share the resources. This would also work in the workplace. Administrators could share articles, statistics, etc. with staff members anda then hold discussions on the content. This would also be true for students. Parents would benefit also. One could organize the page by category. If a child is struggling in reading, there could be some links that would give information on how to help as well as online inter-active sites. I could see myself attaching this to my school web page for parents to access easily. They could also add to it when they found a site that was helpful to them.

2) Back to the Trends & Issues reading, to what degree do the definitions in this chapter correspond with what you have thought about this area and what it is you hope to do in your line of work (or in a future career)? Does is there anything surprising or very new you read in this chapter? Does something seem to be missing?

I have never really though for Instructional Design and Technology. As I read this week, I have been thinking about how the definition is related to education. If I think about how I have defined technology in the past, it has been in correlation with multi-media. Similar to how is was deifned in chapter one where we focus on "the means via which instruction is presented to learners." (Resier 2007, pg 3) I am excited to see that the definition has changed to "the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources." (Reisner, 2007, pg 6). I think the key words are 'facilitating learning and improving performance'. I think that what might be missing is that the technology aspect of learning needs to be across the curriculum. Teachers in all curricular areas need to teaching with technology. Technology needs to be seen as a way to improve what we already do, it is a way of thinking. We need to use technology to teach the curriculum that is set before us,not create a curriculum that fits the technolgy that is available.

Week 2 Reflection Activity

  • I found the blog to be fun to use. This is my first experience using a blog, however I do have a webpage on my school's website and they are setup in much he same way. I had never used Blogger or done an RSS feed before. I am still trying to wrap my head around how the RSS feed would be beneficial for my classroom teaching. I was wondering if the having a feed on my school web page would allow parents to subscribe. This would be beneficial for me because I am now sending out a group email letting them know when I have made a change. Would and RSS feed help me in this way? I am still trying to figure this out.

  • Dale's Cone helps us think and work collaboratively. Technology falls in the demonstrations area of the cone. A blog and and RSS feed is a key component in receiving and sharing information quickly. It helps us to communicate as we design and the communications happens rather quickly. I found another chart in my Google search that helped me process the Cone and how it might relate to teaching. I have provided the link below.
    http://teacherworld.com/potdale.html

  • In regard to Siegel's article on using a blog or RSS feed for "imaginative" education, we can access information quickly and share information quickly. In thinking about Postman's question as to what does a Blog or RSS feed fix i encourage you to think about how information was gathered before. The Internet allows the information to be found and the RSS feed or blog allows groups of people to share the information. It allows groups of people to research different aspects of a subject and then come together collaboratively for one end result. It allows students to work with other students they may not be exposed to in a regular classroom, providing them with a broader experience.

  • Wiki Reflection

It enjoyed learning how to do the Wiki. I would have liked to have figured out that the to it was on my WMU email (better yet, I didn't even realize the WMU email was different from the Blackboard). I still am working out in my mind how this would benefit a teacher of young children. I might be able to expose some of my students to the Wiki when working on a non-fiction writing assignment. There are some students who avoid writing because of the actual paper pencil aspect of writing. Using a Wiki might helps those studnets that hate writing, but love technology!

Week 1

I have spent a couple of days thinking about the two articles. Reigeluth really spoke to me because of the changes the staff at the school I work at is working towards in regard to technology. Over the past three years, our staff has worked hard to take our technology curriculum to the next level. Reigeluth's article really made me think about the direction teaching could take. I love thinking about technology as "transforming" teaching. The reality of technology in the classroom needs to be realize as the information highway continues to change. The question for me is how do we help professionals see the teaching potential that lies in technology. As technology becomes a part of our world, we have to figure out how to educate and train teachers to use the technology that works for the curriculum they are expected to teach. We want to show them how curriculum can drive how we use technology. Reigeluth recognizes that this is not an easy task. I believe that schools systems are recognizing that the new educational need is to prepare all learners to be problem solvers, to take initiative, to work in teams, etc. Postman on the other hand, defines the purpose of a school to "teach children how to behave in groups". Perhaps this is one aspect of education, but I question if it is the purpose. In response to the statement "School has never been about individualized learning", I would disagree. Educators work hard to meet each child at their level. If educators see teaching as a learning focused paradigm, technology could aide the teacher in maximizing each child's potential. In the teaching world, we call this differentiated instruction. It can be difficult to achieve, however it is necessary to help each student learn and grow. I find technology as an integral part of teaching. If we choose to use technology to teach children, we will help them move forward, if we do not, they will quickly become among those individuals who are unemployed.

Mission Statement

  • To empower and encourage teaching professionals to explore technology and the way it can transform teaching.
  • To equip children and teachers with the knowledge needed to use technology as part of their teaching and learning.
